Conductor Ken Selden and professional ensemble to perform “Pierrot Lunaire” to be performed at Marylhurst

Marylhurst University’s Department of Music will present a one-time-only performance of Arnold Schoenberg’s dramatic and emotional song cycle "Pierrot Lunaire" in St Anne’s Chapel on Friday, May 23rd at 7:30. General admission is a mere $5.00.

This seminal modern work, for chamber orchestra and solo vocalist, is a setting of twenty-one poems by the Belgian poet Albert Giraud telling the story of “Moonstruck Pierre,” a half-mad clown given to increasingly bizarre visions. It is rarely performed due to its complexity and difficulty

Portland State University Director of Orchestras Ken Selden conducts a chamber orchestra comprised of members of the Oregon Symphony; Pollyanna Hancock-Moody, voice professor at Marylhurst University, plays the role of Pierrot.

The instrumentalists are:
Jessica Sindell, flute and piccolo (Oregon Symphony principal)
David Hattner, clarinet and bass clarinet (Portland Youth Philharmonic Music Director)
Fumino Ando, violin and viola (Oregon Symphony)
Valdine Mishkin, cello (George Fox University Professor)
Janet Coleman, piano (Pacific University Professor)

Also on the program are two new works by Marylhurst composition students Ian Guthrie and Brandon Stewart.
