Principal flute position open at the Oregon Symphony

According to the audition page on the OSO website, the principal flute position is open at the Oregon Symphony. I've been wondering what has happened to Jessica Sindell (who has been the orchestra's principal flutist since January of 2012), because she didn't play any of the concerts from late January to the close of the season. I was told by the OSO administration that she was on leave of absence. I decided to check her facebook page and have found out that she is at the Shepherd School of Music (Rice University). I don't know anything more about why she left the orchestra. I really enjoyed her playing while she was here, and I wish her the best.

  1. Why anyone would move to Houston from PDX is a mystery to me.

But, yes, good luck to her.

  2. Sheppard school of music at Rice, is currently one of the best graduate flute programs in the country. Tuition is free to the very few lucky ones who get in. A great place to be if ones to win a huge job.

  3. Jessica won the audition and, like all new musicians, she did two "probationary" years, which gives the orchestra freedom to keep or dismiss the musician before they are granted tenure. They chose to dismiss her and have another audition.

  8. I just checked the RPO web site. Jessica Sindell is now listed as a member of the flute section. Also, Kalmar is still the conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de RTVE in Madrid. He conducted the concert last night and it was broadcast on RTVE radio which you can hear on the RTVE web site. As far as I am concerned, the notice on Slipped Disc is bogus.
