ASCAP awards for new music programming by orchestras announced
The New Music Box has the lowdown on all of the orchestras (big budget category to the small budget ones - plus college and youth orchestras). I'm surprised that Portland State University and its conductor Ken Selden didn't win again in the college category, but they were beaten out by Cornell, Peabody, and Brown. Maybe the upshot is that new music is catching on. The announcement was made in Chicago where the League of American Orchestras is holding its annual meeting.

Great to see Esa-Pekka Salonen get another, justly deserved, award. He is a real rarity in today's classical music world:
1/ an excellent composer,
2/ a fabulous conductor,
3/ a great orchestra builder, and,
4/ a serious and consistent advocate for music of our time.
Alex Ross wrote a wonderful piece on Salonen's departure from the LA Phil in the May 4, 2009 issue of the New Yorker.
D-Bob sez, check it out.
