On
February 12, 1924 at New York's Aeolian Hall, self-named 'King of Jazz'
Paul Whiteman presented An Experiment in Modern Music, a concert
combining "high art" and "hot jazz." The concert featured newly
commissioned works from Victor Herbert, Jerome Kern, Edward MacDowell,
Irving Berlin, Ferde Grofé, and Rudolf Friml, but the highlight of the
program was the world premiere performance of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
