On
May 18, 1981, the American Composers Orchestra conducted by Dennis
Russell Davies premiered Joan Tower's very first composition conceived
for symphony orchestra, Sequoia. Since then, Sequoia, has been performed
by more than 40 orchestras around the world. The recording by Leonard
Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony, which was part of the Meet The
Composers Orchestra Residency Series CDs for Nonesuch Records, has
recently been reissued on First Edition Music.
