On May 30, 1923, 26-year-old composer and conductor Howard Hanson, who
would later be one of the founders of the American Music Center, led the
world premiere performance of his Nordic Symphony, the first of his
seven symphonies and still one of his best-known works, in Rome during
his residence as first holder of the American Rome Prize.
